David Rothenberg, 2007. X Covers.

A series of inkjet prints on canvas based on the four Time Magazine "X covers", for which painted X's were superimposed over the portraits of dead or defeated wartime adversaries of the United States. Utilizing second-hand covers of the X issues as source material, in which the subscriber's identity on mailing labels has been marked over by hand and concealed, I incorporated the handmade marks and the mechanically reproduced X's as a formal contradiction within the digitally constructed canvases.

Below: Time Magazine "X Covers" (original issues 1945-2006) and detail of August 23, 2003 (2007).
