Varmint Mayhem (dog-gone), 2006. DVD, 5:01, sound.
Resembling modern military imagery of battlefields taken from the greatest possible distance, video zooms push and pull the viewer to specific target points within the darkened and glowing landscape. Incorporating altered video footage from a DVD produced by a group of prairie dog hunters, the targeted animals in the video have been erased from its individual frames, creating an abstracted no-man's land. Long and disoriented shots of barren, black and white video landscapes are reoriented suddenly as the loud, metallic sound of a gunshot and the simultaneous image of exploding mounds of earth and billowing white smoke mark the center of the landscape. |
